How to control Hair Fall? Natural Home Remedies for Hair Growth

Hair loss is one of the most common problems nowadays affecting both men and women. Apart from genetic factors, there are several other reasons for hair loss including under-active thyroid glands, stress, hormonal imbalance, nutritional deficiency, ageing, scalp infection, certain medical conditions or side effects of medicines, air pollution and insufficient circulation of blood.

According to hair experts, losing 50-100 strands of hair every day is fairly normal. It is only a cause of concern when you lose more than that. 
Your hair defines how healthy your mind and body are. And the best way to maintain the health of your hair is by using natural remedies and nourishing.
There are several home remedies using readily available ingredients at home to control and stop hair fall. Here are some of the effective home remedies to stop hair fall and promote hair growth.

1. Coconut Milk:

Coconut milk is rich in vitamin E, proteins, essential fats and minerals such as potassium. The milk is rich in potassium, another vital ingredient for hair growth. Thus, washing your hair with coconut milk can help reduce breakage of hair. Massaging your scalp regularly with this oil provides a protective action against hair loss. You can grate coconut and squeeze out the milk by mixing in a little water. It also has antibacterial properties that protect the hair from damage.


How to use

1 cup coconut milk

Apply coconut milk to your scalp using a hair dye brush.

Then cover your head with a towel and leave it on for about 30 minutes. You can ideally prepare coconut milk at home by grinding the grated coconut and squeezing its milk.

After that, remove the towel and rinse your hair with cold water.

2. Onion juice

Onion is a rich source of sulphur which helps in hair growth by increasing collagen production. Using its juice on the scalp can help in controlling hair fall. Did you know these onion health benefits?

How to use

Chop one onion finely and squeeze out its juice.
Apply the juice on your scalp and let it stay for 1 hour.
Now rinse with a mild shampoo and let your hair air dry.
Use this thrice a week to see the results.

3. Garlic 

Like the onion, garlic to has high sulphur content. This is the reason why it is used in traditional hair regrowth medicines. You’d be surprised to know these beauty benefits of garlic.

How to use


- Crush a few cloves of garlic.
- Add coconut oil to it and boil the mixture for a few minutes.
- Let it cool down a bit and then massage it on your scalp.
- You can leave it on for 30 minutes and then wash your hair.
- Do this two times in a week.

4. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera used to cleanse pores and balance your pH levels. However, people do not know that aloe vera is good to prevent hair loss. Applying natural aloe vera gel on scalp and hair is one of the best ways to prevent hair loss and promote hair growth. The benefits of aloe vera can be traced back to the 75 nutrients that it contains.

Enzymes present in aloe vera such as proteolitic enzymes removes dead skin cells from the scalp so that the hair follicles don’t remain clogged. In addition, it is a nourishing conditioner that makes hair silky soft and smooth. Take two tablespoons of your shampoo in a bowl. Add one tablespoon of aloe vera gel, coconut milk and half teaspoon of wheat germ. Mix it together and shampoo your hair with it.

5. Amla - Indian Gooseberry

Alma, also known as Indian Goose Berry and it is a popular remedy used in Ayurveda. Regular application of amla directly on hair helps in strengthening the hair follicles, stimulates hair growth and prevents hair breakage and split ends. There are many magical properties of amla; it is filled with antioxidants and vitamin C.

Amla is good for healthy hair growth and is also known for improving the pigmentation of the hair. Mix 2 teaspoons of amla juice with 2 teaspoons of lime juice. Apply this mixture on the scalp and leave it to dry for 2 hours. Rinse off with warm water.

6. Vitamin E Oil

Filled with antioxidants, vitamin E oil fights the free radicals. It helps to increase oxygen in the body and increases the blood circulation in the scalp. Massage your scalp with vitamin E oil and leave it overnight. Wash it off with a mild shampoo the following day to gain silky smooth hair.

7. Fenugreek seeds

Fenugreek seed known as Methi Dana is among the most effective home remedies to stop the hair loss. It repairs the hair follicles and helps in re-growth of the hair. Rich in proteins and nicotinic acid, fenugreek seeds strengthen the hair shaft and make your hair strong, shiny and long.


How to use

1 cup of fenugreek seeds
Soak the fenugreek seeds overnight in water. Grind it to a fine paste the next day and apply it to your hair and scalp. Leave the paste on your head for around 30-40 minutes. You can cover your scalp using a shower cap to keep it moist. After 30  minutes, rinse it with normal water. Do not use any shampoo. Do it twice a week for control hair fall.


8. Neem (Indian Lilac)

Neem has excellent antibacterial properties that help you get rid of dandruff. This ensures the scalp is healthy and promotes hair growth. It also stimulates blood flow to the skin, thereby nourishing the hair roots. Neem is even found to eliminate head lice and nits.


What you need
10 – 12 dry neem leaves
A vessel containing water

How to use

1.    Boil the neem leaves in water till the water level comes down to half its quantity.
2.    Wait for the mixture to cool.
3.    Rinse your hair with this mixture.
You can use this remedy as a last rinse after shampooing your hair. It can ideally be done once every week.
Pre-caution
Using neem for hair (especially in the case of dandruff) can cause your eyes to burn. So, be careful while washing off the neem water and ensure it doesn’t get into your eyes.

 9. Coriander Juice

Coriander is known to make your hair soft and prevent hair loss. Apart from this, it is also effective in promoting hair growth.


What you need

- 1 cup freshly chopped coriander leaves
- 3 – 4 tablespoons water

How to use

1.    Grind the coriander leaves and mix them with water to form a paste.
2.    Extract the juice from the paste, and using a hair dye brush, apply it to your scalp and hair.
3.    Leave it on for an hour, and then shampoo as usual.
 
In the morning, before taking a bath. You can try this out twice or thrice a week.

10. Beetroot juice

Beetroot contains vitamin C and B, potassium, calcium, carbohydrates, protein, phosphorous, which are essential nutrients for healthy hair. It is one of the best kitchen remedies to control hair fall. You can consume it daily for the fast growth of hair.


How to use

Take few Beetroot leaves, 1 tablespoon of henna
Put the beetroot leaves in 2 cups of water and boil it till the water is reduced to half its quantity. Let it cool and then grind it. Add the henna to make a paste. Apply it to your scalp and hair. Leave it for around 20 minutes and then rinse it with normal water. Follow this procedure thrice a week to control hair fall and make it healthy.


11. Castor Oil

This is healthy and nourishing natural oil that is extremely beneficial for promoting fast hair growth. It is loaded with vitamin E and essential amino acids – specifically omega 9 amino acids that are essential for the health of the scalp and follicles. Castor oil is also a potent natural remedy for scalp psoriasis. In pure form, castor oil is quite viscous, and therefore it is best to dilute it with some other oil like coconut oil, olive oil or almond oil.

How to use

You can massage this oil into your scalp and hair for 10 minutes and then leave it on for 1 hour. Wash it off with a mild shampoo. This remedy can be repeated 2-3 times in a week for best results.

12. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a wonderful ingredient that can promote hair growth and keep your thick and bouncy. In fact, it is known as one of the most popular home remedies for hair growth. Now the question is, how does it balance the hair’s pH levels? The answer is that store bought hair products disrupt the hair’s natural pH balance, and ACV can restore the hair’s pH back to optimal levels because it contains the same pH as healthy hair.

It also adds a dazzling shine to the hair. It helps treat clogged hair follicles and activates better circulation on the head, which stimulates hair growth, thus stopping hair loss. What works for Apple Cider Vinegar is that it contains varied nutrients beneficial to the hair, such as B vitamins, vitamin C, and potassium.

How to use

Take 2 tbsp. of raw organic apple cider vinegar and 1 cup water.
Combine the ingredients in a cup or bowl.
Shampoo and condition your hair as you normally would. Once you’ve rinsed both the shampoo and conditioner thoroughly, cover your hair with the raw apple cider vinegar rinse. Let it for 10-15 minutes and then wash off, you will see clean, healthy and bouncy hair.

13. Flaxseed Oil

Flaxseed Oil is a rich source of the essential fatty acid (EFA) named alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA. Such EFAs are essential for hair health. People who lack these often have problems growing their hair. EFAs help forms the structure of every hair cell. The ALA in flaxseed oil can help block the enzyme called 5 alpha-reductase, which converts the testosterone into the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a male hormone, or androgen, that blocks hair growth cells.


How to use

Start by wetting your hair lightly in the shower and dry off the excess water so that it does not drip. Pour a small amount of flax oil into your palm and with gentle massaging strokes, apply it all over your scalp. Let it stay overnight and wash off the excess oil in the morning.

14. Almond Oil

We know that almond oil is rich in Vitamin E, monounsaturated fatty acids, potassium, proteins, and zinc, besides a number of essential minerals and vitamins, which is why it has incredible benefits for hair.


How to use

Warm one tablespoon of oil and apply it to the scalp every night after your shower or bath. With gentle massaging strokes, apply the oil onto the scalp. Leave it on overnight for best results and wash off with a mild shampoo the next day.
 As a Bonus: Apart from these home remedies, avoid doing this with your hairs 
  • Rubbing wet hair vigorously will lead to hair breakage. Avoid brushing wet hair for the same reason.
  • Don’t tie your hair tightly all the time as it puts pressure on the roots and causes hair to fall.
  • Heat in any form is bad for hair. Hot water, hair dryers and hair styling tools dry out the hair, limit their usage. 
  • Try not to use too many hair products as residue can build up. Rinse shampoo well to make sure hair follicles are not clogged.
  • Make sure to follow product instructions carefully. If you use too much of a product, it could lead to more hair fall.
